Product Description The HK 3490 was born to make beautiful music and, like all specialists, it's very good at what it does. It features high-current, ultrawide-bandwidth amplification, a signature Harman Kardon technology that delivers all the subtlety of an original musical performance, whether reproduced from vinyl or your MP3 player of choice. But even specialists enjoy a change of pace from time to time. So the HK 3490 also features four high-quality composite video inputs, and convenient front-panel inputs for video games and portable audio players. At 120 watts per channel, this powerful HK 3490 stereo receiver combines all of an audiophile's must-haves (high performance phono preamp, preouts/main-in jacks, high-current amplification) with an array of multichannel extras (digital-audio inputs, video switching, dual subwoofer outputs and Dolby Virtual Speaker technology). Add the optional Bridge II docking station, and the HK 3490 will connect as elegantly to your newfangled iPod as it does to your time-honored turntable. The HK 3490 isn't a snob about where the music comes from, as long as it sounds great when it reaches its final destination: your ears. Connects to the optional Harman Kardon-engineered The Bridge II docking station for iPod playback, control and charging Stereo preamp outputs allow the use of an external power amplifier Two digital audio inputs (one coaxial and one digital) Convenient front-panel audio/video input for use with video games or portable players One high-quality phono input for connection of record players with an MM cartridge Two analog recording outputs (tape and video) FM stereo/FM/AM tuner with RDS, auto preset, direct-access tuning and 30 presets Two-line dot-matrix display for clear visibility Dimmer reduces the brightness of the information screen, or switches it off completely

| Customer Reviews:
A very fine receiver and a fantastic value August 30, 2010 RBH (So. Calif.) I bought this receiver about a month ago. It was to replace an aged Technics receiver of 165 watts/channel. The Technics had developed some intermittently noisy internal components somewhere downstream of the volume control. The noise, when occasionally present, exiting the receiver at full 165 watt levels immediately destroyed the voice coils of the silk soft dome high frequency drivers in an (otherwise) excellent mid-1970s vintage Visonik passive subwoofer speaker system (the old "David and Goliath" system). After some years of trying, I was able to find identical replacements for the "dead" German made (Braun) HF drivers. I opened the satellite housings and carefully replaced the drivers.
Now, the problem remained that I didn't dare to even try the old Technics receiver as I surely didn't want to repeat the destruction of the virtually irreplaceable HF drivers. I tried to use some other lower powered amplifiers at my disposal but they all sounded horrible when unsuccessfully trying to produce the power levels required by the inefficient Visonik speaker system. To make matters worse, the subwoofer of the Visonik system is physically a monster, making it impractical to drag the system to stores in order to audition other amplifiers or receivers.
When I ran across mention of the HK 3490, I started doing research and reading forums on the net. All sounded very good in light of my needs. Ultimately, I took a stab and bought the HK 3490 sight unseen. A week later, when it arrived via UPS (very well packaged I might add), I couldn't wait to unpack it and give it a try.
To make a long story short, the HK 3490 makes the old Visonik system sing as in the old days and the sound is wonderful. The high current, 120 watts/channel is more than adequate and the sonics of the resultant system leaves nothing to be desired. And, at only $299.95, nothing else of which I am aware on the market could even come close. Maybe for 3x or 4x or 5x the cost, but not for $299.95!
I cannot rate the tuner section because I haven't seriously tried it. I cannot rate the digital inputs as I haven't tried them yet although I do have a CD player with an optical output so I intend to give it a try.
The remote is a bit clunky looking although it works fine and the lettering is big enough to read easily. Come to think of it, I actually like it better than the somewhat more "stylish" remotes that come with other components and flat panels because the buttons on the HK remove are so much easier to see and read.
The receiver itself is quite handsome.
Be mindful of one little thing. The little bass, treble and balance knobs on the front of the receiver must be depressed and then allowed to "pop" out a little bit before you can rotate them. The solution to this was simply a case of "if all else fails, read the manual." The little knobs work fine if you read the manual and learn that you must you "pop" them out first. That's all I have to complain about!
All in all, I am extremely happy with my purchase. Build quality appears to be excellent. Sound quality is clearly excellent. Operation and user interface is intuitive. Looks are very good, and value couldn't be any better. I cannot see how anyone could go wrong with this HK if you need relatively high power.
Great receiver and quick shipping August 19, 2010 Chad This receiver works great for my bar room. It has 8x 8" Polk in ceiling speakers, and it powers them very well!!
Nice piece. August 4, 2010 hmmm I bought one of these cheap and I've used this thing at different places around the house, and brought it to friends' for parties. I have used it to drive some Sony SSF-7000s alone in the garage. I think they sounded better then with my pioneer 1018, in nearly the same config. Then I powered some Polk RTi-A1s, then some Monitor 70s, both helped by a PSW505. All sounded amazing. I haven't got to use the digital inputs much, but I chose it over the 3390 in case I wanted to in the future. I'm anti-iPod, so I never tried a Bridge II, but my Creative Zen X-Fi sounds awesome through the front stereo input. From what I hear, the Bridge III will not hook up to it, so do your homework before assuming it's compatible.
Pros: Great amp, A and B connections, digital inputs. Great looks, though the lighted volume knob is a bit cheesy looking up real close, it looks cool when you power it on. 2 pre-amp outs for subwoofers. It seems to run pretty cool.
Cons: The only real adjustments are bass and treble and balance knobs on the front, so don't expect to play around with a million little settings. Its a stereo receiver! No variable built in crossover for a powered subwoofer without active crossovers-that was my only real complaint.
Powerhouse July 15, 2010 Lyle P. Parkins Consignment (Parkersburg, WV, US) A real powerhouse - and beautiful. Only downside I've found is the range of the bass boost / ( loudness ) is very limited. Most all control is via remote.
Old-school fidelity July 11, 2010 Deadpool They don't typically make receivers like they used to. Most of the home theater-type receivers just don't cut it when it comes to high quality sound. The low THD (0.07% @ 8 ohms) on this amp is a hard thing to find nowadays; especially for this price. My CDs and ipod sound great with this amp, and my vinyl sounds even better. If you want a great amp for listening to music, this will not disappoint. Even at high volume levels, this amp doesn't noticebaly distort like my last one, which was a home theater-type amp, did. If you have other quality components, this amp will only improve their perceived performance. Great response along the whole sound spectrum of bass, mids, and highs. The amp is easy to use, and looks great too. If you're thinking about getting this amp, you should probably go ahead and grab it. You'll like it. If you have an ipod, you should get the bridge II to go with this. It only took me a few minutes to figure out how to use all of the functions on this amp. There simply aren't too many out there like this one, anymore. I do not use it for watching movies, so I can only talk about how it does with music, and it does music very, very well.
